Tree Removal & Mitigation
July 29, 2020
Dear MCCMA Homeowner,
As the association manager I recently met with David Coon who is the City Forester with the Parks Department. We had an incident, on a privately owned lot, where a large cottonwood was knocked down by the wind missing that individual’s hot tub by a few feet. In the past we have struggled, individually and as an association in the common areas, to gain approval from the city to have any tress removed. During this meeting David agreed that several of the surrounding cottonwoods on this particular property had something he termed as “girdling roots” and that he would not be opposed to having trees with that issue removed for safety reasons.
If you are concerned about this on your own property and to accomplish removal David needs to have an individual plan submitted to him. Once that plan is submitted he will then review and give the homeowner permission to remove the certain approved trees. I will be taking this task on for the common areas throughout the Master Association and will be asking the individual townhome associations to do the same in their common areas.
I recommend each homeowner engage a company of their choice and have a report done on the trees on each individual’s property. Certainly, damage to your own home would be awful and if a tree on your property falls on a neighboring lot, causing damage, that is another set of problems, entirely.
On behalf of the association I have engage Aspen Tree Service. Their contact is Chris Forman (970) 319-9313. He is a master arborist and forester. Another option in the valley is Twisted Tree, (970) 927-5025. Or, I would suggest, you speak with your current landscaping company to see what arborist they like to work with.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Sarah J Korpela
